Thesis- Western Europe and Japan both used very similar methods of industrialization, however Japan imposed self isolation and developed later, where as Western Europe was more open to ideas. It was the global power that Europe was gaining, which enlighened the Japanese to industrialize.
Causes of modernization in Japan
Foreign pressure from Britain, US, and French did not want to end up like foreign controlled Chinese, started to make reforms
Foreign pressure was French, British, and U.S. pushing Japan to open up their economy to outside nations
Commodore Matthew C. Perry sailed to japan with U.S. naval fleet and demanded japan sign "treaty of friendship"
End of Tokugawa rule, Mutsuhito (Boy Emperor) rules from 1852-1912, most eventful time in Japanese history
Japan becomes most industrious land in Asia, and poised for dramatic and industrial expansion in the 20th century

Causes of modernization in Western Europe
competition for resources and power promotes technological and industrial growth in western Europe
Starts with Britain because of abundant resources and agricultural surpluses( aware of their head start, the government forbade the export of machinery, manufacturing techniques, and skilled workers). Nevertheless, France, Germany, Belgium, and the US had started to industrialize.
Factory machinery more productive than an average worker, and cheaper in the long run.
Needed faster forms of transportation= more steel and iron made. (breakthroughs in technology)

Movement of people on the farm, to people in the factory.
Urbanization= people living in smaller more crammed, unsanitary conditions, with small living spaces
unorganized and chaotic cities
At first, some people protested due to low wages they were not used to and unemployment, blamed the factory system for it, so they destroyed numerous factory machines and supplies.
These groups were known as Luddites (King Lud= leader).
Massive production and Corporations/ Big business (in the past was large farms and land).
